If your complaint is not resolved with the help of the complaints officer, you can have your complaint reviewed by the Dental Care Disputes Committee (Geschilleninstantie Mondzorg). This committee issues a binding decision regarding the complaint.

Dissatisfied with your dentist? Here’s what you can do
Are you unhappy with, for example, the treatment, behavior, or billing of your dentist, orthodontist, or dental prosthetist? And are you considering filing a complaint? Here’s what you can do.
Step 1. Talk to your dentist
Request a clarifying conversation with your dentist, orthodontist, or dental prosthetist. This often resolves many issues. You can explain what you are unhappy about, and your dentist, orthodontist, or prosthetist can clarify why something was done in a certain way.
Moreover, it is important for your oral care provider to know that there is a problem. Together, you can make agreements on a solution. The Dental Information Point (TIP) can assist you with this.
Step 2. Contact the Dental Information Point (TIP)
The TIP is an initiative by the KNMT and exists to provide patients with reliable and independent information about dental care.
In addition to providing information, a TIP staff member can help you think about the best way to discuss your concerns with your dentist, orthodontist, or dental prosthetist if you are dissatisfied.
The TIP staff member can also check for you whether your dentist (or practice) or orthodontist is registered with the KNMT Complaints Service.
Please note that the TIP does not handle your complaint and does not mediate between you and your oral care provider. Contacting TIP does not constitute a formal mediation request. The TIP staff member will inform you, if necessary, how and where you can submit a formal complaint.
If you want to know whether your dental prosthetist is registered with the complaints service of the Organization of Dutch Dental Prosthetists (ONT), you can perform a check.
Step 3. Submitting a Complaint
If you were unable to reach a solution with your dental prosthetist using the information on www.kunstgebit.nl
or through the Dental Information Point (TIP), you can submit a complaint regarding your treatment and/or the dental prosthesis provided.
If the Dental Information Point (TIP) was unable to help you reach a solution with your dentist or orthodontist, you can submit a request for complaint mediation via the KNMT Complaints Service. Once you have submitted a mediation request, a complaints officer will contact both you and your care provider/dentist.
The complaint process is conducted in Dutch. If you have difficulty with the Dutch language, ask someone to assist you in submitting the complaint.
How to submit a complaint through KNMT:
1. Check if the complaint submission deadline has passed
If you find that something went wrong with your dentist or orthodontist and want to complain, note that your right to file a complaint expires 5 years after the incident.
2. Check if the dentist or practice is registered with KNMT
Ask the dentist or practice directly, or contact TIP. You can only use the KNMT Complaints Service if the dentist (or specialist) or practice is registered with KNMT.
3. Prepare a written letter and attach it
The letter must be written in Dutch for your complaint to be processed. Be sure to include the following points in your letter:
Name of the practice and location where you were treated
Name and initials of the person you are complaining about
What you are complaining about
State your complaint clearly and factually
What you want to achieve by submitting the complaint
What can you expect from the KNMT Complaints Service?
The KNMT Complaints Service:
Does not judge the complaint
Does not make a decision on the complaint
Mediates between the patient and the dentist
Works with the dentist to find a solution
For more information on what to expect from the KNMT Complaints Service, see their guidelines.
Complaint procedure startup time
Starting a new complaint procedure takes approximately 4 weeks. Once your procedure has started, we will contact you. Thank you in advance for your patience.
If you are sending attachments via the online form, please ensure that the total size of the attachments does not exceed 20MB.
